Is it any good? Mission Impossible: Fall out

Your mission should you choose to accept it, is to check this review out and go watch this movie asap.

Henry Cavill to Tom:  “Do people actually fall for this shit?”

Yes Henry, they still do coz this shit is dope. The new mission impossible movie hit the theaters on 27th July and I was able to watch it on 29th. I have been itching to write this movie because there is a lot to talk about.

The MI franchise is quite possibly the second longest running spy franchise behind the legendary James bond series. Tom cruise played the now iconic Ethan hunt role 6 times, each time risking more than he ever did. What really amazed me was the audience reaction to the movie. Through out the movie I could hear thunderous cheers, applause, audible gasps and even a couple of “fuck!!!!!”. I mean tom cruise is almost as old my dad and the fact that he can do all those stunts gives me or anyone for that matter serious fitness goals.

Two years after Ethan Hunt had successfully captured Solomon Lane, the remnants of the Syndicate have reformed into another organization called the Apostles. Under the leadership of a mysterious fundamentalist known only as John Lark, the organization is planning on acquiring three plutonium cores. Ethan and his team are sent to Berlin to intercept them, but the mission fails when Ethan saves Luther and the Apostles escape with the plutonium. With CIA agent August Walker joining the team, Ethan and his allies must now find the plutonium cores before it’s too late.

Why you Should Watch it:

Its a MI movie, so as you can imagine its not really about the plot. Its all about masks, betrayal, crazy stunts, a single long shot of tom cruise running  and Ethan hunt, for the 6th time disavowed so that he can go on an epic journey to stop the bad guy from destroying the world.

The new series of these MI movies are different when it comes to their cinematography. Some of the shots in the movie are absolutely gorgeous. The Stunts are amazing and the fact a major portion of these are practical effects and it shows why good old practical effects can beat CGI fest on any given day. One particularly notable aspects are the fight scenes. I am really thankful they didnt go with tiring, eye tangling shaky cam style. This felt jackie chanesque, of course not as good him but it has long shots of hand to hand combat. The camera was steady and we can see the action clearly. We can see every punch, every crash clearly. The bathroom fight scene from the trailer is as good as they advertised. I actually wished it lasted a little longer.

The direction is great, the acting is good and it has some unexpected heart warming moments (especially one with Ving Rhames and Rebecca Ferguson). Everyone played their part perfectly. Henry Cavill with his million dollar mustache played the hammer part perfectly. He was imposing, cunning and ridiculously charismatic. And he brought something to the table that all the other MI movies were lacking in my opinion. A menacing bad guy Ethan needs to beat, literally and metaphorically.

But who are we kidding here, this is a Tom Cruise show. From the first frame to the last he owned the movie. The fact that he would push him so far for the sake of movies is something I always admired. Personal beliefs aside, I still believe this man is a professional and a perfectionist in art of movie making. I mean he learned how to fly a helicopter for the sake of the finale, he performed a halo jump, rode through paris traffic in a bike and everything else in between.

The ending to the movie felt perfect. It was a nice way to tie most of the loose ends up from the previous movie (apart from a missing Jeremy runner, which at this point is a theme in franchises lol), which makes me ponder if there should be another movie in this franchise.

In all honesty this movie is easily the best in the entire franchise. And We can see that Ethan hunt sacrificed so much for the sake of saving the world and he definitely deserves to end it on a high note. I would love to see more from this franchise no doubt, but I have to wonder where they can go from here.

Unless they decide to actually kill Hunt’s current romantic interest Ilsa and make it about revenge. As much as I love these movies watching hunt getting disavowed and betrayed will get boring eventually. So go the daniel craig route, make it more personal. We are all clearly invested in Hunt so make it personal, John wick style!

Who should watch it:

If you are looking for an adrenaline pumping, action packed thrill ride or a Tom cruise fan or MI fan or just want to watch something to relax.

Who shouldn’t watch it:

People who are more into plot, prefer drama, and extremely complicated dynamics or if you are just too pretentious and cant enjoy a good fun movie.
